Gas Industry Co is seeking to streamline the manner in which it provides information and work programme updates to industry participants and stakeholders. We have changed the way we manage our contact list by introducing a set of self-managed, subscription email lists.
This is a brief explanation of how the lists work as well as instructions on how to join a list.
Subscribe
Anyone who wishes to subscribe to the 'Stakeholder" list can send a blank email with subscribe Stakeholder in the subject line to gic-lists
gasindustry [dot] co [dot] nz
Unsubscribe
If you wish to be removed from this list, please send a blank email with unsubscribe Stakeholder in the subject line to gic-lists
gasindustry [dot] co [dot] nz
Other distribution lists
We are developing a set of distribution lists for a variety of topics.
Current lists can be viewed by sending a blank email to gic-lists
gasindustry [dot] co [dot] nz with subject line lists
To find out which lists you are subscribed to at any point in time, send a blank email to gic-lists
gasindustry [dot] co [dot] nz with the subject line which.
The commands available to use with this list server are:
|
Command
|
Brief description
|
|
Lists
|
To receive a list of the all the mailing lists
|
|
Which
|
To receive a list of the mailing lists to which your mailbox is subscribed
|
|
Subscribe
|
To subscribe to a mailing list
|
|
Unsubscribe
|
To unsubscribe from a mailing list to which you are currently subscribed
|
The syntax for using each of these commands correctly is described below. Please note that these commands are processed by a machine. It is very unforgiving of errors in the commands it is sent. Also, it interprets everything in the email as a command so please make sure:
- no email signatures are included; and
- if you are sending commands in the body of an email that the email is formatted as “plain text” (for example, html-formatted emails will generally not work with the list server)
Lists
Use the
lists command to retrieve a list of the mailing lists available. The easiest way to use this command is to send an email to
gic-lists
gasindustry [dot] co [dot] nz with the word
lists in the subject line and make sure the body of the email is blank (that means you need to delete the signature if your email client automatically includes a signature block in your emails).
You will receive an email that contains the mailing list names and descriptions.
Which
To show which lists a subscriber belongs to. You use this in exactly the same way as the
lists command. Just send a
blank email to
gic-lists
gasindustry [dot] co [dot] nz with the word
which in the subject line and make sure the body of the email is completely blank.
You will receive an email listing the names of the lists to which your mailbox is subscribed.
Subscribe
The subscribe command, as its name suggests, is used to subscribe you to a list. The simplest way to use this command is to create a blank email with the following text in the subject line:
subscribe list-name
Of course you must provide the actual name of the list, e.g. Stakeholders.
If you want to subscribe to several lists at once you can type several subscribe commands on separate lines in the body of a plain text email. For example, the following would subscribe the sender to three lists: (in this case you leave the subject line empty)
subscribe Stakeholders
subscribe CodeChanges
subscribe TxBalancing
As noted above, it is important that the email be formatted as plain text and contain only the commands for the list server. This is because the list server will try and interpret any other lines in the email as commands and that will cause errors.
A more advanced form of the subscribe command allows you to specify the email address of the subscriber, for example:
subscribe Stakeholders
fred [dot] flintstone
bedrock [dot] com
would result in two things happening:
- the email address fred [dot] flintstone
bedrock [dot] com would be added to the Stakeholders list; and
- an email would be sent to fred [dot] flintstone
bedrock [dot] com informing him of that fact and providing a brief description of the list.
It is not acceptable to subscribe people to lists without their express permission.
If you leave out the [email-address] then your own mailbox will be subscribed to the list.
Some lists are intended for a specific purpose and membership is restricted. For example the Reconciliation list is concerned with traffic among allocation participants on technical matters that arise under the rules. As such membership of that list is restricted to allocation participants. If you are joining a restricted list, please allow time for your subscription to be approved by the list manager before your request is finalised.
Unsubscribe
To cancel your subscription to a list you use the unsubscribe command as follows:
Unsubscribe list-name
Where list-name is the name of a list to which you have previously subscribed. You can simply send the command in the subject line of a blank email.
If you wish to cancel your subscription to a number of lists then you can send multiple unsubscribe commands in the body of a plain text email as follows: (leaving the subject line empty)
unsubscribe Stakeholders
unsubscribe CodeChanges
unsubscribe TxBalancing
Remember, only list server commands should be placed in the subject or the body of the message - don't include anything other than commands in the message.
