Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG – a mixture of propane and butane) is widely used throughout New Zealand. It works on the same or similar appliances as natural gas and offers the same quality advantages. While it is generally not as cost-effective as natural gas in many North Island centres, it offers a competitive alternative to other heating options – particularly for water heating - in the South Island, and in parts of the North Island where there is no reticulated natural gas.
